It’s a learning curve for us to create this cream wooden floor drop, even after I had some experience creating the brown rustic floors last year (see my other post).

The cost (in memory) for a pair of 2.5mx2m boards is below:

  • floor planks (initial $500) + second run ($100)
  • two wooden strips from Bunnings to assemble the backdrop together and fix into the wall ($15)
  • white paint $0 (a random pot lives in my house)
  • nails $2

The planks we got from the timber yard (message me if you need recommendation for the timber yard in Sydney) are quite plain and regular (in terms of width and look). I’m sure what type of wood they are but they fit our purpose and in our budget, not too thick (not too heavy to handle), approx 20mm width. Initially we painted on the coarse side. However the result looks too busy to me. We decided to undo and unscrew, flip over and repaint on the other side. Then screw back up again. It was quite a big hassle because I’m in between clients sessions, paint needs to dry etc. Anyway, the final result looks a lot better. I think it’s all worth it.

To sum up, the recommendations I would suggest for this DIY project is:

  1. plan ahead and get enough supply in one go
  2. use smooth side rather than the coarse side for the cream floors
  3. get trade discount 😉
  4. paint two coats
  5. paint individually before screw them all together
  6. dont over paint otherwise you loose the vintage style texture
  7. sand the edges and use nails to create chips ( I didn’t do much because the wood planks have holes on them)

The SYDNEY timber yards we went to are the below ones:

1. Heritage Building Center:

432B West Botany Street
Rockdale NSW 2216
Australia

This would be my first recommendation. They have many aged rustic style floors. Price $$$$$, service is average but, you get the best yummiest looking timbers!

2. Iron woods

They’ve recently moved to st Peter’s check the website info.

Not many aged planks although a lot of recycled planks. They are either too thick too heavy, or too average treated. Price is less, service is top ( they helped us cut to length and load to our car)
