If possible, schedule a newborn photo session during the second-or early third-trimester to secure a spot on the photographer’s calendar. Weeks 1 through 8 of newborn life are ideal for capturing the essence of teensy-tiny babies.

If I’m completely honest, pre-Week 6 was even better; most of my best sleeping poses were taken around week 5 or prior. Some 2-week old babies cry throughout the session – you never know what you’re going to get.

In theory, it’s never too late to schedule a professional photography session for an older infant or toddler. However, every stage of a baby’s life involves different considerations.

Instead of approaching your newborn or infant photography session from a “when is too late?””late?””late?”” ” angle, view prospective sessions through the lens of “what does each week- or month- bring to the experience?”

Week 1 – Week 2: The Ideal Window for a Newborn Session

In order to take advantage of this ideal window, you should book your photography session well in advance of the due date. This is the only way to rest assured a slot in your choice photographer’s calendar.

Preemies, twins, and multiplets are exceptions

Babies born early should wait till they reach to their full term or due date, or weighing at least 2.8kg to shoot. This may lead to baby being born 3 months already. Sissi shot a preemie baby born at her 21 weeks weighing only 800g on birth. The time during her shoot is 3 month but still photos look like typical newborns.

Week 3 – Week 4: Ok to shoot but photographer may need to go a little extra miles.

Newborn sessions is always full of challenges. Sometimes this timeframe gives us easy baby as 1-2 weeks but sometimes we have to face fussy babies too. Every session is an unknown until it’s fully finished. If you miss out the first two weeks, better book it in a hurry (of course pick your photographers wisely).

Week 5 – Week 8: Lower your expectations, the sessions may be exhausting

It is certainly not only exhausting for the photographers to shoot older newborns, but the moms too. Moms may need to constantly feed or comfort the baby (if the photographer cannot settle the baby down). Time may stretch up to 1 hour more for perfect photos. Whereas we may have to sacrifice some details like curled fingers, opened eyes, larger body, crying expressions… If you can handle all these or your baby missed out the early age, these photos are still precious. Book you sessions before you completely miss out your newborn photos.

Week 8+

We don’t suggest you to find photographers to shoot at this age. You may as well just wait for another 4 weeks until 3 months+ to have some awake shots with smiles.

Every one of these milestones is worthy of celebration, and what better way to commemorate them than with priceless photography and canvas-worthy imagery?
